It is often said that "your home is your castle". Every homeowner can attest to this belief, but when your castle is being renovated, it can feel like your beloved kingdom is under attack. Walls suddenly disappear, strange people making loud noises and your sacred room becomes unrecognizable as it just disappears. A plumber calls for the fourth time to say he can't make it and your contractor casually informs you that you're £2,000 over budget.
Ensuring your home is protected during builds is vital and can prevent missed deadlines and over-spend on budgets:
- My Beloved Carpets
Thankfully when it comes to protecting your precious rugs and carpets numerous options abound. Due to the nature of carpet material, a film solution may be the most viable option. Think of it like cling-film for you carpets. This special eco-friendly adhesive ensures that your carpet protector stays in place and is durable enough for the heaviest of foot traffic, spillages, debris, dust and heavy foot traffic during building or construction projects. The standard-width carpet protection film is extremely effective in protecting carpeted surfaces on site. It adheres to the carpet surface without the need for taping or fixing and is easily removed leaving no adhesive residue. Reverse wound for quick and easy application, the lightweight rolls of 600mm x 25m Non-FR carpet protection film are ideal for quick and effective protection of carpeted walkways, corridors and stairways. Application is quick and easy – simply roll your film over your carpet in rows until your carpet is completely covered. You should overlap by 2” to be safe.
- Outside Matters
Catch dirt and debris before it even enters the home. Trapmats are tacky mats that provide cost effective dust and dirt containment for fit-out and refurbishment work. The high-tack adhesive mat surface will trap and remove dust and debris from foot and wheeled traffic. Each tacky mat contains 30 numbered peel-away sheets coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive. The sheets capture work dust and debris in doorways to reduce the need for cleaning in non-working areas. The non-slip trapmats can be laid directly onto any clean floor surface and removed without damaging the floor below.
- Clean Feet = Clean Floors
Say good-bye to scuffs, footprints and heel marks with overshoes. Designed to slip on easily, they're extremely affordable and convenient. Made from a heavy duty disposable elasticated polyethylene, to one universal size, Protec Overshoes fit all types of footwear, pulling easily over working boots. They’re also highly visible, making it easy to identify and educate non-users.
- From Tile To Oak
Anyone with wooden or ceramic floors - knows that horrible sinking feeling when you first discover a scratch! Wooden surfaces in particular are highly prone to surface damage but thankfully numerous solutions are available. The most economical solution would be paper based. Protec 1m x 50m Flooring Protector (Heavy Duty) is a durable biodegradable protector made from breathable material to protect hard floors and surfaces. Protec’s Heavy Duty Flooring Protector offers cost effective temporary floor protection from heavy foot traffic, construction and building work. The easy to lay rolls cover large areas quickly, ideal for protecting timber flooring, stone flooring and screed flooring.
When a board or paper solution will not suffice, alternative options include Proplex. Proplex 3mm corrugated plastic sheeting provides the ideal alternative to plywood or other timber products for the protection of stairs, columns, walls, floors, doors and windows. Proplex translucent corrugated plastic sheeting is similar to Correx, and is widely used for a variety of internal and external applications during refurbishment, decorating, building and construction projects. Made from an extruded twinwall plastic sheet produced from polypropylene, Proplex 3mm corrugated plastic sheeting is a lightweight and extremely strong temporary protection material for surfaces, fixtures, fittings and floor protection - and offers better value than Correx. Proplex durable 3mm polypropylene sheets - very similar to Correx corrugated plastic sheeting - provide 100% protection and can also be found in a 2mm roll format, black recycled material, a flame retardant version and in different thicknesses from 2mm to 5mm.

Customer feedback. by JEM, 10 Aug 2011 ‘Worth it's weight in gold. We had the screen up for 3 days and nights whilst the majority of our staircase was removed and replaced. The workmen naturally created a fair amount of dust, but none of it travelled outside of the working area. Luckily the workmen left their area clean each night and the zipwall, left the landing and bedrooms free from dust for the family. The zip door kit allowed us access morning and night without having to take the screen down and put it up again. Would recommend to anyone...’
- Its Bath Time
With some designer bathtubs costing over £2,000 its crucial not to forget the bathroom. You can simply cover the bathtub and sink units with Heavy Duty Polythene for a quick fix. For a longer term solution Protect Flame Retardant Bath Protectors are used to effectively protect baths from damage during building, construction and refurbishment projects. Unlike more traditional methods of bathroom protection such as 'boxing in', Protec’s flame retardant Bath Protectors are inexpensive, re-usable, easy assembly and simple to install. They are pre-creased with lockable tabs for quick and easy assembly and fitting.
- A Stairway To Somewhere
Due to the physical nature of stairs, protecting them can often be tricky. Standard drop cloths are easily displaced and lose position but thankfully there is a conforming solution. Available in a 20m roll, the cushioned foam Handrail and Balustrade Protector is pre-slit, ready to fit directly onto any hand rail or balustrade with minimum fixing. It can be re-used numerous times and is easily removed without damaging the surface of the stair handrail beneath. This used along with our stair sized floor protection effectively protects your stairway!
