New kitchen and bathroom installations can be very costly. Of course, it’s all relative, but as areas of a house to re-fit, items such as sinks, baths and worktops rank highly in the cost stakes particuarly is they are bespoke items with large lead times. The cost of damage therefore can be comparatively high also. That’s why, our range of kitchen & bathroom protection products are among our best sellers. So which of your new prized possessions can you protect during the installation, and what should you be using?

Whether it is lining a pond, covering building materials, lining a shed or screening off a specfic area the range of Polythene offered by Protec will satisfy the requirements of the majority of temporary screening and covering applications with a versatile range of polythene suited to numerous scenarios. When reviewing the Protec Polythene it may be useful to divide them into Flame Retardant and Non Flame Retardant in order to assess the viability of the different product offerings. After all, each product is different and has properties that lend themselves better to certain applications than others.
Amongst the Flame Retardant Polythene there is a Light (260 gauge), Medium (308 gauge) and Heavy (800 gauge) Duty grade all of which are certificated to LPS1207 and therefore fully flame retardant. As a consequence of their flame retardant properties this polythene is white in colour which is favoured in applications where screening areas wants to obscure visibility. The three thickness of this FR Polythene in the three grades in large format 4m rolls ensures that large areas can be covered or screened quickly and effectively provided a barrier to reflect the environment it is being used in. How to line your pond with Protec 1000 Guage Polythene

A number of clients have been purchasing Protec’s Proplex Sheeting for backdrops in various theatre productions as well as using it for stage scenery like our recent blog where a designer, Mike Rogers, created movable screens which represented different locations during the production . The material, particularly in black, provides outstanding performance for stage use whether it’s creating a darkened back screening or even, in some instances, for cut out props etc. The 2mm grade is easily bent/cut for creating any number of shapes and the higher 4mm grade is rigid enough to stand as a screen. When the black version is used it is also great for blocking out light! Continue reading →
“You Me Bum Bum Train, a very unusual name for what is a very unusual theatrical experience. This is its fifth staging and every time the experience is unique and totally immersive. This year the event was based in a discussed Royal Mail sorting office in the heart of London. A massive space that was taken over to allow for 21 unique scenes through which the audience member proceeds (on their own).
How to protect your carpets with Protec Carpet Protector
Whether you’re having a party, decorating, renovating or have messy pets, carpets can be expensive to clean and even more expensive to replace so here is a video on how to protect your carpets with Protec’s Carpet Protector.
There have been various blogs in the past on theatres using our products to help make various scenery and props for their productions and we are now able to relay some of their advice to other designers who are looking to use ProplexPlastic Sheeting for their projects. Usually Proplex is used for Surface Protection but Mike Rogers used it for a great material for making stage scenery and here is what he had to say.
‘Borrowing an idea suggested by another drama group who used Correx for scenery building, I needed to find a comparable product to cover a wooden framework to make light, portable triangle flat units on castors (3 faces 2 x 1 m each with a different design on each).
I decided to use 3mm Proplex, because it was competitive in price and less than half the cost of plywood. It proved to be an excellent choice, being easy to cut, fix and decorate. I tried using staples to fix the sheets to the wooden framework but found that they sprung too easily and that one inch round nails with heads were more effective. Finishing the surfaces proved less of a problem than I anticipated: they were either painted with matt emulsion paint or covered with wallpaper. I prepared the surface for painting by using a medium abrasive, which definitely improved adhesion. The 3mm Proplex proved adequately firm for the units; however, I also used a number of 4mm sheets, which improved the stability. I would probably use these another time. The lightness of the material was a real benefit, and scene changes (involving two units) were achieved in less than ten seconds, which brought one critic to say that the idea was ‘incredibly innovative’. Moving the furniture on the set took quite a bit longer!’

Aproximately one year ago Protec International took the plunge into social media. Operating in an industry that was a little reluctant to adopt social media at first it soon became obvious there were established and emerging platforms that more and more people were engaging in and this included construction and building professionals. The opportunity to engage in a way that was instantaneous, 24/7 and took advantage of multiple emerging technologies such as smartphones and tablets made the jump to social media very logical. We set-up our Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Flickr pages and got started.
Along the way we have found that being able to extend our reach through refferal techniques such as shares and re-tweets has become invaluable and really boosted the exposure of our Blog which not only provides news on products and services but handy tips for construction and DIY professionals ranging from commercial builds to housebuilding. This payed off in January 2012 when Protec’s Blog was nominated for an award in the Construction Marketing Ideas – Best Construction Blog 2012.
So one year on and we have over 1200 followers on Twitter, various videos on YouTube and seeing some fantastic interaction on Google+ so why not join us our various social media platforms and ask us a question, get some advice or just say hello!
