A Gym, whether a commercial membership facility or in your home, needs suitable floor protection. But what should you use to protect the floor in your gym?

Heavy and large equipment that is put directly onto floors can mark or damage them after time and use along with the danger of free weights being dropped or falling from height mean a suitable form of protection is necessary. Protec stock a wide range of floor protectuion items that can suit almost any need and this extends to our PVC Interlocking tiles which are great for a gym floor application. So if you run a gym, or just fancy one in your home, then give our enquiries team a call and ask about our PVC Interlocking Tiles and they will be able to offer helpful advice.

How to Build Stage Scenery with Proplex

There have been various blogs in the past on theatres using our products to help make various scenery and props for their productions and we are now able to relay some of their advice to other designers who are looking to use Proplex Plastic Sheeting for their projects. Usually Proplex is used for Surface Protection but Mike Rogers used it for a great material for making stage scenery and here is what he had to say.

‘Borrowing an idea suggested by another drama group who used Correx for scenery building, I needed to find a comparable product to cover a wooden framework to make light, portable triangle flat units on castors (3 faces 2 x 1 m each with a different design on each).

I decided to use 3mm Proplex, because it was competitive in price and less than half the cost of plywood. It proved to be an excellent choice, being easy to cut, fix and decorate. I tried using staples to fix the sheets to the wooden framework but found that they sprung too easily and that one inch round nails with heads were more effective. Finishing the surfaces proved less of a problem than I anticipated: they were either painted with matt emulsion paint or covered with wallpaper. I prepared the surface for painting by using a medium abrasive, which definitely improved adhesion. The 3mm Proplex proved adequately firm for the units; however, I also used a number of 4mm sheets, which improved the stability. I would probably use these another time. The lightness of the material was a real benefit, and scene changes (involving two units) were achieved in less than ten seconds, which brought one critic to say that the idea was ‘incredibly innovative’. Moving the furniture on the set took quite a bit longer!’

S&W in the Community Big Challenge 2011 – Blag Project, Burnley

Styles&Wood recently finished and handed over their latest community challenge at Blag Project in Burnley! The 2011 Big Challenge was for a community scheme that Styles&Wood have had engagement with for the past two years but were pleased to complete and handover to their delighted clients, Fran and Amanda, and deliver some major work to the project.
As a member of Styles&Wood’s supply chain, Protec were more than happy to have contributed to the project donating various resource and materials. We wanted to take a quick minute to commend Styles&Wood and the rest of their supply chain on the big effort put into these projects and helping the community.

Well done Styles&Wood!

Aproximately one year ago Protec International took the plunge into social media. Operating in an industry that was a little reluctant to adopt social media at first it soon became obvious there were established and emerging platforms that more and more people were engaging in and this included construction and building professionals. The opportunity to engage in a way that was instantaneous, 24/7 and took advantage of multiple emerging technologies such as smartphones and tablets made the jump to social media very logical. We set-up our Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Flickr pages and got started.

Along the way we have found that being able to extend our reach through refferal techniques such as shares and re-tweets has become invaluable and really boosted the exposure of our Blog which not only provides news on products and services but handy tips for construction and DIY professionals ranging from commercial builds to housebuilding. This payed off in January 2012 when Protec’s Blog was nominated for an award  in the Construction Marketing Ideas – Best Construction Blog 2012.

So one year on and we have over 1200 followers on Twitter, various videos on YouTube and seeing some fantastic interaction on Google+ so why not join us our various social media platforms and ask us a question, get some advice or just say hello! You can find our pages through the relevant buttons on the top right of this page or click below to automaticaly follow us on Twitter.

With frosty April mornings coming up it is a timely point at which to write a blog about one the most useful extra strong construction tape a building site can have in its stores.  Protec Anti Slip tape is a 25mm x 18.2m roll of high tack tape with a rough “sand paper-esq” surface that provides slip resistance when it is secured to floor protection.

Anti Slip Tape is extremely useful t all times of the year and in many ways it’s use should be encouraged as standard best practice on sites as it is a means of reducing slip related accidents but it is especially significant at this time of the year when  wet and icy conditions are more prevalent.

Originally Anti Slip tape was developed for use primarily for the temporary tread protection that Protec supply in the Rigid Tread Protectors and the Flame Retardant Stair Protector. It was found that by applying a couple of strips along the step part of each tread protector, significant additional grip was added thus making them safer for site traffic up and down the stairs.

For the best results when using Anti Slip tape it is recommended that it is applied firmly to a clean and dry surface to give the adhesive the best chance of sticking and remaining stuck down.

Since Anti Slip tape was added to the Protec tape range it has been used on a wide variety of protection products to provide additional grip both internally and externally. A notable use is using it directly on top of the Self Adhesive Carpet Protection on stair ways and also on external steps.

Protec Anti Slip tape is a versatile option for extra grip where it’s needed.

It is often said that “your home is your castle”. Every homeowner can attest to this belief, but when your castle is being remodeled, it can feel like your beloved kingdom is under attack. Walls suddenly disappear, strange people making loud noises and your sacred room becomes unrecognizable as it just disappeared. A plumber calls for the fourth time to say he can’t make it and your contractor casually informs you that you’re £2,000 over budget.

Ensuring your home is protected during builds is vital and can prevent missed deadlines and over-spend on budgets

  • Outside Matters
Catch dirt and debris before it even enters the home. Trapmats are tacky mats that provide cost effective dust and dirt containment for fit-out and refurbishment work. The high-tack adhesive mat surface will trap and remove dust and debris from foot and wheeled traffic. Each tacky mat contains 30 numbered peel-away sheets coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive. The sheets capture work dust and debris in doorways to reduce the need for cleaning in non-working areas. The non-slip trapmats can be laid directly onto any clean floor surface and removed without damaging the floor below.

  • Clean Feet = Clean Floors
Say good-bye to scuffs, footprints and heel marks with overshoes. Designed to slip on easily, they’re extremely affordable and convenient. Made from a heavy duty disposable elasticated polyethylene, to one universal size, Protec Overshoes fit all types of footwear, pulling easily over working boots. They’re also highly visible, making it easy to identify and educate non-users. Continue reading

Whilst most of the products that Protec supply are firmly founded in Construction with the aim of protecting new and existing areas of build whilst works are carried out a number of niche uses of our products are fed back to us from the general public. Previous blogs have described the use of Proplex sheets in making homes for Guinea Pigs as its water proof cleanable properties make it ideal for lining cages.

Another Protec product that has been recently identified as “Guinea Pig and Rabbit” Friendly is the Flame Retardant Hand Rail Protector Tube 2m. This foam tube is being used by a number of “Cavy Breeders” as a form of water bottle protection especially on external hutches during the winter months.

The primary use of the Handrail protector in this application is, when cut down to size, is to provide insulation against frost and thus reducing the risk of the water bottle freezing. The further benefit of having this impact resistant foam secured around the water bottle is general protection against any knocks or damage that may impact upon it.

The Handrail protector can be easily cut to size and its pre-slit centre allows it to be wrapped around water bottles and held in place with a Cable Tie (available from Protec) at the top and the bottom. The foam is best used on water bottles that are secured on the outside of the cage to prevent the foam from being chewed or ingested by the Guinea Pig.

This is another product that can be used to benefit a Guinea Pig living environment.

We have recently seen a large amount of interest in our carpet protection products on our website. Typically these are used on commercial sites to protect floors and carpets from ongoing work and this is a testament to its performance and durability however, they are also great for home-use and protecting carpets from various situations like parties and pets! We know how good our products are at protecting valuable fittings and materials in the home but why not read what a recent customer had to say!

Usage: Carpet Protector – 17 Year olds birthday party

Opinion: ‘This product saved our new carpets from my daughter’s 17th birthday party (over 38 people in our 4 bed house). This is a fabulous product and I would recommend it to anyone, be aware though that you need more than you think – the 25 metre roll only just covered two rooms (not that big) luckily we ordered 2 rolls – next time I’d buy the 100m roll to ensure I had enough for more carpets. Great carpet protection product.’

There are various reasons why Temporary Protection Materials are used on construction sites and at home for DIY/refurbishment projects.

Here are 3 important benefits that we have identified where  temporary protection materials have helped various contractors and builders that we have worked with over the years helping to protect their floors, scaffolding, windows, doors and various other fittings.

  • Avoid disruption to your build schedule

With accidental damage to unprotected surfaces, fixtures and fittings costing a significant amount of lost time and money, it’s easy to see why the use of temporary protection is becoming more widespread.

And yet when time is tight, and the pressure’s on for completions, it’s also easy to see why some think they’ll save time by not using it. If the site is to run smoothly, completed on time and finished to a better standard, it’s a proven fact that the use of temporary protection materials can help site managers to meet those requirements.

  • Prevent damage to your reputation

It’s also true that a more discerning customer has ever-increasing expectations, and the need to create a high quality image and product has never been of greater importance. Temporary protection is principally about avoiding expensive damage and unsightly mess, but it’s also about creating the right image.

Not only will it save you time and money, it shows care and pride in the job and creates a positive impression of your qualities as a builder.

  • Maximise your profitability

The use of temporary protection materials early in the build process can reduce the need to replace expensive fixtures and fittings, saving on cost and time and help maximise your profitability.

Protec has developed an unrivalled and comprehensive range to suit all protection needs, designed to deliver high performance with maximum effectiveness.

So let Protec take care of your damage, and your profitability will take care of itself.
